The beergarden is located in the middle of the English Garden at the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower), a
pagoda dating originally from 1789 and reconstructed after the last war. The tower is completely made of
wood and 5 storeys high.
It is one of Munich's most popular beergardens and with 7000 seats the second largest in Munich. The
beergarden has became a tourist attraction, but you'll find also locals here. Many visitors are students
from the nearby university.
Sitting in the shadow below chestnut trees you get first rate beer and Bavarian food, for example
Schweinebraten (braised loin of pork) served with potato dumplings, all kinds of sausage, Obatzda (a
Bavarian cheese delicacy). Baskets of pretzels are passed around eaten with Radi (large white radishes).
Every weekend and many times during the week in summer brass bands play tradional Bavarian music on
the first floor of the tower.

The beergarden is open March to November daily from 10 am to midnight, December to February only when the weather is good.
Special Tip: Every year in July at the Chinese Tower beergarden the traditional Kocherlball (cooks' ball)
takes place. This ball is held in memory to the servants of the noble families of the late 19th century.
In these times up to 5000 servants, soldiers and students came to the tower Sunday morning to
dance and to have conversation. The ball began already at 5 am and ended at 8 am, so that servants could
return to serve their employers' breakfast or attend church.
In 1989 a revival of this tradition was made and the ball is since celebrated every year. Beginning
around 6 am. The participants are dressed in old-fashioned clothes and an orchestra plays polka and
other traditional dances.
